At the beginning of the game when I was building my islands, I did not realize that building things like Trade Unions and Harbormaster's Quarters cost resources and influence. It was already explained to me once, but I didn't quite realize it until this week that you have a limited pool of influence that can be replenished by removing the things that are taking up the points.
